Two fine line black tattoos on inner forearms, a small arrow on one arm and a bow on the other, with hands clasped on a beach.

Arrow and bow tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people hold hands on a sandy beach with turquoise sea behind them. Each has a small, thin black outline tattoo on the inner forearm: an arrow on the left arm and a bow on the right, both drawn with simple single-weight linework and no shading. A larger wave-like black outline tattoo is partly visible on the upper arm of the person on the right.

Keep still, the wasps only want the windfalls, and you're sat right on the path to them. Now mind the crooked tree at the far wall, the one the old bishop's man grafted before the flood. Good. This is the tale of the bowyer's boy and the fletcher's girl, and it happened in late August, just like this, when the apples came down faster than anyone could gather them.

He carved bows from the yew that grows beside the churchyard, and she bound arrows with goose feathers plucked from the flock she was paid to mind. Neither could hit a barn door. They spent every evening arguing over whether the wood or the feather made a shaft fly true. Each night he hooked a bow on her gatepost, and each morning she left an arrow on his, and both scowled at the other's work before going off to mend their own.

Then came the Harvest Fair, with a cask of cider for whoever could strike the bell at the orchard's far end. He loosed first and his shaft went wide into the plums. She loosed next and her arrow tumbled like a dropped feather. Standing there with her bow arm shaking, she said, "Then hold yours steady and I'll hold mine." They drew together, his hand over hers on the string, and the bell rang out clear across the grass.

They never married, or not that anyone wrote down, but they inked a bow on his wrist and an arrow on hers, so that when they held hands the two lines lay end to end. And in the mornings, when the windfalls rolled across the lawn, the gatepost still had a bow and an arrow hanging side by side, neither one aimed at anything in particular.
