Geometric staff with arrows and waves
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical staff runs through a stacked design of simple black symbols, including a pennant-like top with wing-shaped bars, crossed arrows, a ring, two horizontal bars, a curved arrow and stacked wave lines. The linework is bold, uniform and symmetrical, with flat solid shapes and no shading. The design is shown in black on a plain white background, centred and vertically arranged.

The staff was already leaning against the sea wall when Maren Ostrow walked up the ramp at Tallow Reach, and the harbourmaster swore it had been there since the last spring tide. Nobody claimed it. It was a black rod taller than a man, with a pennant at the head, a pair of crossed arrows halfway down, and a ring like a sleeping eye below them. The children called it the Weathervane, though it never turned. Old Ibe Campsall said it turned only when someone lied within sight of it.

Maren had come to Tallow for the salvage rights on the drowned freighter Ardent Ruth, and she had a ledger full of figures that did not add up. She stood beside the staff for an hour, reading the two bars and the curved arrow below the ring, and the stacked waves at its foot, until the tide turned and the wind came round off the water. The pennant lifted. The crossed arrows swung a hair to the east, pointing at the hull lying on its side in the shallows.
She went down to the wreck that night with a lamp and a borrowed hook. Inside the cargo hold she found a crate of medical glass, unbroken, and beneath it the ship's real manifest, sealed in wax, listing the passengers who had been sent ashore at Tallow years before and never counted. Her own grandmother's name was on the third line.
In the morning she sold the salvage rights to the harbour council for a single coin and asked only that the staff be left standing where it was, so the next lie told in Tallow would have something to point at.
