Four ornate skeleton keys
Black and grey · Flash
Four skeleton keys are stacked vertically, each drawn as a solid black silhouette on a white background. The bows range from scrolled and lattice patterns to a rounded rosette and a clover-like shape, while the bits differ in their teeth and notches. The bold, flat shapes and clean edges suggest a stencil or flash sheet rather than shaded linework, and the design is entirely black and grey.

Tomas had filed the fourth bit twice before the rain pushed Mr Abel Quill through the workshop door, shaking his hat over the sawdust. "Those are for the Lodge gates," he said, nodding at the blanks on the bench. "Four of them, one for each gate and one for the postern in the old wall. Don't ask me why there are four. My father never asked."

Tomas didn't ask either. He had come to Hollin Edge at fourteen to learn the trade from Mrs Ada Brisk, who could tell a lock's temper by the sound of a pick, and she had taught him that the forest begins where the last lamp goes out. The Lodge stood a mile past that lamp, among beeches so old their roots had cracked the lane into steps. Nobody went up there now except the charcoal burners, and they came down only at Michaelmas.
On the third evening the keys were finished. Tomas wrapped them in greased cloth and walked them up the lane with a lantern that kept guttering. The first gate took its key with a stiff, satisfied click. The second gave under a turn of the wrist. He had almost given up on the postern, where ivy had grown into the keyhole, when the fourth key slid in as if it had been waiting, and the wall itself seemed to sigh open onto a path of pale moss.
Beyond it stood a cottage with a green door and a row of brass escutcheons, each polished, each empty of anything but dust. Tomas turned the last key once more and understood that the Lodge had never been locked against anyone. It had only been waiting for someone to bring the keys back.
