Two open palms show small black line tattoos: an arrow, dots and a symbol on one hand, and an eye with a short line of lettering on the other.

Arrow, eye and lettering on palms

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two open palms face the camera, with a wristwatch and tattooed forearm visible at the edges. One palm carries a fine line arrow, several small dots and a simple symbol, while the other has a single-line eye above a short line of block lettering. All the ink is black, with clean, thin outlines and no shading, set against warm skin tones and a dark wooden table.

Dear Tom, the kettle has boiled twice while I sat with your last card open on the table, and Mrs Hebden next door has asked me three times whether you'll be home for the harvest dance. I haven't answered her. I haven't really answered anyone since the telegram about the Marion went round the Co-op, though I know you'll tell me I'm being soft.

Do you remember our game on the back step, drawing on each other's hands with Dad's fountain pen? You put the arrow on your palm and said it always points home, and I put the eye on mine so nothing could get past it. The little dots were the lights between the pier and the ferry steps, and the words were what you always said when we were frightened of the dark: the devil won't keep you till morning. I laughed at you then. I wasn't laughing on Thursday, when the fog rolled up over the allotments and I stood at the gate listening for boots that weren't there.

Yesterday I walked down to the harbour with that pen in my coat pocket. Nobody was on the pier except the gull boy, and I counted the dots under my breath as I went, the way you taught me, four of them, and at the last one I stopped. From there the arrow on my own palm lined up perfectly with the window above the chandlers, the one with the lamp that Mr Pryce has left burning every night since you went.

So I've bought a new wick and filled the lamp, and I've told Mrs Hebden you'll be at the dance. Come home by the dots, Tom. I'll keep the light on.

Your loving sister, Nell
