The dandelion clock on the south wall was the last thing Dad wanted to talk about, which is why I kept telling him about it. He lay in the front room with the window open and the bees bumping against the glass, and I described the seed heads the way he used to describe the weather: how many there were, how pale, how close to going.

He had a rule about them. You blow once, you make a wish, and you never count the seeds left on the stalk, because those belong to next year. I thought it was nonsense until the Tuesday he asked me to cut one and bring it in a jam jar so he could see it properly. I held it under his nose. He pursed his lips and blew, slow and careful, the way he'd taught me to blow out birthday candles without wasting the wax.
The seeds lifted, caught the light from the window and broke into small dark shapes that wheeled out over the fence like a flock setting off for somewhere warmer. He watched them until the last was a speck above the leylandii. Then he said that was the arrow, Pip, you just had to let go of the string and trust the wind to finish the job.
He asked for tea. I went to make it, carrying the empty jar in my hand, and I didn't put it down until the kettle had boiled twice.
