Tribal turtle line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black ink drawing of a turtle in profile, with its head facing left and its legs and tail reduced to simple tapered shapes. The shell is filled with thick, flowing swirls and curved bands that repeat the outline, giving a tribal-inspired pattern. The drawing is set on plain off-white paper with even lighting and no other elements.

Dear Tom, the lift on Ward 6 has been out since Tuesday, so I take the stairs at three in the morning with a cup of tea I forget to drink. The corridor lights dim to half at night and the floor shines like a wet pebble, and I've decided that's the only peace the job gives you.

Bed nine is Walter Pryce, eighty-one, who ran a crab boat out of Padstow for forty years and still talks about tides as if they owe him money. He can't sleep, so he draws. Last night he had a biro and the back of a breakfast menu, and he drew a turtle with its head poking out to the left, the way they do when they're deciding whether the sand is safe. The shell is nothing but swirls, one band folding into the next, and he kept going over the lines until the paper went shiny.
"That's the Atlantic on her back," he said, when I asked. "Coming round and round and never getting to the shore." Then he tapped the tail, which is just two tapered flicks, and said his grandson Elliot has one exactly like it and isn't allowed to visit since the row with his daughter.
At half four he asked me to post the drawing for him. I said I would. I folded it into my pocket, where it's still crackling against my pen. I'm not sure a menu sheet counts as a letter, Tom, but I'm writing this one to you instead, so we'll see.
