Your mam says you have been sulking since I put the rod up on the top shelf of the coal house. Don't. I took it down on Sunday and walked it out to Hollin Dam before the cage came up, and I want you to know the line still runs true. Mr Ashworth's old spaniel followed me the whole way and sat on the bank like a magistrate while I cast. I caught nothing, but I shouted the thing your Uncle Ray always shouted, the words on the rod, just to hear it come back off the water.

The bamboo has a split near the reel seat, so I bound it with black cotton the way Ray showed me, and it held. The lure is the little feathered one from the biscuit tin, the one you were never allowed to touch. I tied it on again with my bad fingers and it took me most of an hour, which is about the length of a tea break down the pit when the fan stops and everybody goes quiet. You get used to quiet down there. You learn to listen for the roof working and the men breathing on the coal, and you start to think a bite on a line is the most ordinary thing in the world.

So here is my plan. On your first free Saturday, you and me go out to the dam with the rod and we do not talk about school or the bus or anybody at the colliery office. We just sit. When something pulls, you shout it. Loud as you like. Fish on.
