Arrow tattoos on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown close together, each with an arrow tattoo. The left arm carries a delicate fine line arrow with feathered fletching and a pointed head, drawn in thin grey-black lines with little shading. The right arm has a bold solid black arrow built from stacked chevrons, a diamond and banded sections, set against light skin and a striped white top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Wenna Pascoe had the last goose feather trimmed by the time the bell began knocking across the harbour, and she knew from its rhythm that the wind had gone round to the south-west. Her cousin Jory was already at the door, dragging on his oilskin. "Three shafts," he said. "Something a man on the Bristol boat can read in the dark."

She sat at the bench under the window and drew the marks on paper first, the way her grandmother had taught her, because a fletcher who guessed at a pattern would be buried in the wrong churchyard. Fine grey lines for the feathers, close and overlapping, so the shaft looked like it was breathing. Bold stacked chevrons for the one that had to be seen from the sea wall, the ash pale and the pitch heavy. A diamond at the centre for the captain's own mark, and bands at the throat so the eye would stop there.

Jory came back with dawn grey on his face and no boat. The Bristol man had turned for the Scillies after all, and the bell had rung for nothing. He took the bold arrow off the bench, turned it in his hand, and said nothing for a long while. Then he walked down to the harbour wall and drove it into the stone above the tideline, feathers pointing east, where anyone coming in from open water would see it first.

"Let him come home by the sign," he said, and went to find his breakfast.
