Matching arrow tattoos on two forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown with black arrow tattoos, one larger with an outlined geometric chevron head and stacked triangular fletching, the other a small, simple arrow with a pointed head. Both use thin black linework with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The wrists are held together, with a turquoise ring visible on one hand and a patterned dress and striped fabric in the background.

The goose feathers had to be matched before they were glued, left wing to left wing, or the arrow would wander off true. Mags Tully taught me that my first winter sweeping her shop, and she said it the way the vicar says grace, without looking up from the bench. Wing to wing. Never mix a goose with a crow just because the shade is close enough.

Nell Harrow and her cousin Pip came in the spring of the hard frost, both fifteen and both sure they could shoot. Mags gave each of them a bow and sent them to the sycamore by the mill race. Nell struck the trunk dead centre on the third go. Pip's arrow sailed over the water and lodged in the reeds, and she waded out after it up to her knees, swearing like a carter, and came back holding it over her head as if it were a prize salmon.
After that they came every Saturday to the bench and learned to bind shafts and cut nocks. Pip wanted fancy heads, barbs like the points of a crown. Nell wanted plain and quick. When Nell's father sent her to the coast to work at the lifeboat house, Mags made each of them a parting arrow. Pip's had a chevron head cut from a biscuit tin, its fletching stacked in steps like a cliff path. Nell's was short and plain, one grey feather. In the yard Pip pressed her wrist against Nell's and said they had matched the wings properly this time. Nell laughed and shot her arrow straight into the sycamore, where it stayed.
