Matching arrow tattoos on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two small arrows are tattooed on the inner wrists, one on each arm, pointing towards the hands. The linework is thin and crisp, with the fletching and arrowhead drawn in simple black strokes and no shading. The photograph is warm and slightly faded, with the hands held together above a pair of ripped light blue jeans.

Dear Nell,

The frost has got into the top field again, so the ewes are being brought down to the barn early and I am writing this at the kitchen table with my boots still on, because Dad has finally fixed the stove and I am not moving until it is warm. Mum says you have been sending her photographs of the flat with the good kettle in it. I told her I would believe the kettle when I saw it with my own eyes.

Something odd happened on Tuesday. I went out to break the ice on the trough and my wrist caught the wire of the gate, a little scrape that stung all the way to the elbow. I stood there in the wet and thought about the afternoon in Hexham when we spent Grandad's last cheque on those arrows. The man in the shop asked whether we wanted them pointing toward the hand or away from it. You said toward, because arrows are for coming home, not for leaving. I called that soppy, and then I said toward too.

The lambing pens are full now, and Dad has taken to counting the gates twice before he sleeps. Every night I look at my arrow by the lamp and then at the window, where the yard runs down to the lane. Yours will be pointing the same way on the train, I suppose, if you have kept it covered in that coat you bought to look like a city person.

Come on the twenty-second. The last bus gets in at quarter past six, and I will be the one standing at the crooked gate with the lamp. Bring the kettle if you must.
