Cameo portrait with roses

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A woman in profile, with her hair swept up, sits inside an ornate silver cameo frame with lace-like detailing. Her face and hair are rendered in soft grey shading with fine highlights. Around the frame, large roses in pink, peach, orange and deep purple fill the composition, with bold black outlines and smooth colour blending.

Mrs Pringle had taken the cameo off the mantel twice that morning and put it back both times, so Ada knew the brooch was going to be a problem before the lodger from number four even came down for breakfast. It lived in a tin on the sideboard, silver gone dull at the scrolls, and the face inside belonged to a lady nobody in the house could name. Ada had dusted it every Friday for six years and never once turned it over.

The boarding house stood at the top of a steep road where the wind came up off the harbour and rattled the sash windows all winter. In June the roses along the garden wall opened so heavily that petals dropped onto the path before anyone could cut them. Ada gathered them into a basin each morning, pink and peach and a deep bruised purple, and carried them through to the front room where the guests took their tea.

On the last Saturday of the season, the lodger from number four, a thin man with ink on his cuffs, asked whether the portrait had ever been painted from life. Mrs Pringle said she had no idea. Ada, who had been watching the brooch catch the lamplight, said the woman seemed to be looking out to sea, as though waiting for a boat she had given up on.

That night Ada took the tin down, lifted the lid, and found a folded slip of paper beneath the brooch in a hand she knew from the laundry lists: Keep the roses going. She went out to the wall with a torch and cut the last bloom before the frost could take it.
