Art Nouveau bellflower forearm sleeve
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The left photograph shows a framed panel of a seated woman with a skull group at her feet, set below red poppies and curling green vines. The right photograph shows the same style of sleeve from another angle, with red bellflowers, grey-shaded leaves and stems wrapping around the forearm. The image mixes solid colour fills with soft shading, and the design fills the full length of the forearm.

Sit down, love, and mind the tea, it's stewed by now. You'll want to know about the lady in the frame at the end of Ward Four, the one with the skulls at her feet. Everybody on nights knows her and nobody on days will say a word.

Sister Hannah Pryce had the ward the winter the lights failed twice in a week. A new porter called Dennis came up from the cellar one night with a bundle of bellflowers he'd cut from the chapel garden, and he wanted them on the sill for the old men who couldn't sleep. Hannah told him the poppies painted on the panel were enough for anyone. He laughed and set the bellflowers under the frame anyway, stems wrapped in damp newspaper, and the ward smelled of rain until morning.
The old men slept that night, every one of them. Dennis swore the woman in the arch had sat up straighter when he touched the glass, and Hannah said that was the porter's tired eyes. But the next night a call bell rang at the far bed with nobody near it, and the skulls at the lady's feet had turned, just a little, to face the bed.
Dennis stayed on the late shift after that. When his own mother took poorly that spring, he sat under the painting with his palm flat on the glass until the sky went grey. The lady kept her head bowed over her folded arms, the way she always had. Hannah never told him what she had seen, only once, when the door opened at six, the painted woman lifted her eyes to watch it until the day staff came in.
