Assorted temporary tattoo designs sheet
Mixed · Flash
A sheet of temporary tattoo designs arranged in a grid on a white background. The set includes koi with blossoms, arrows, a hummingbird, tribal motifs, a skull with a red bow, a swallow, a turtle, a peacock feather, stars, hearts, owls and a claddagh. Most designs are black line work or solid shapes, while the koi, hummingbird and owls use coloured ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mae had spent the whole of the Easter fair at the transfer stall, licking her thumb and pressing damp paper to the wrists of children who wanted owls, and by the last night her thumb had gone soft and white as candle wax. Her father ran the stall with a cash tin and a biro, but it was Mae who knew the sheets by heart: the koi that seemed to swim off the paper, the arrows, the lone hummingbird nobody bought because it was too green.

The swallow was the one she kept back. It was a small black thing with two curved wings and a forked tail, and the old woman who came every year for it never said why. This year she came late, when the lights on the waltzer had already dimmed and the generator had started its cough. She had no coins, only a bus ticket folded into a square and a question about whether the design would survive a shower.
Mae gave her the sheet anyway. She cut the swallow out with the nail scissors from the cutlery drawer, rubbed the backing until it was warm, and showed her how to press it firm with a damp flannel, counting slowly to thirty the way her father had taught her. The old woman counted with her lips moving.
When she peeled the paper away, the bird came off whole, and she held it up to the bulbs as if checking for weather. "They come back to the same barn," she said. "Every spring, whatever distance they've covered." Mae packed the sheets into the tin and watched her walk off past the candy floss, the small black shape held carefully between two fingers.
