A sheet of black line-and-solid designs on a white background. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gate wasn't finished by Friday, and Mr Pryce had already told the vicar it would be. So I sat up at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low and drew the scroll again, the fourth time that week, because a curl that closes too early looks like a fist, and nobody wants a fist on a churchyard gate.

My father bent iron cold over the anvil and trusted his thumb. He never drew anything in his life. I had squared paper from the shop in Walsall and a pencil worn to a stub, and I had filled half a ream with hearts, some split by vines, some full of little rings like a pond after rain. Father called it idleness. Mother pinned the best sheet above the range, where the steam had gone soft at the corners.

When the Pryce boy came for the wedding railings in February, he took one look at that sheet and asked whether a heart could be made to hold a flower. Father said iron didn't bend that way. Mother said nothing and went out to the yard with the lantern. I heard the hammer start at four in the morning, slow and careful, and I knew she was punching the dots through the metal one by one, so the light would come through the gate in small bright coins.

By the wedding the frost had settled on everything. The bride stood at the gate with her gloves in one hand and laid her palm flat against the heart, and the shadows of its tiny holes fell across her knuckles like a scatter of seed. Nobody asked who had drawn it, and I didn't say. Some things are best made in a yard at four in the morning by someone who never signs her name.
