AT-AT walker on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black linework tattoo of an AT-AT walker, the four-legged armoured vehicle from Star Wars, is shown in side profile. The lines are a uniform dark outline with little interior shading, leaving the panels of the walker's body and legs unfilled. The walker is centred on the lower leg against a pale background of a tiled floor and salon chairs.

You'll think I've gone soft, but I've kept a thing from the lost property shelf well past its three months, and I want to tell someone why. It came in a carrier bag on a wet Tuesday, wrapped in the sports pages. A grey plastic walker with four long legs and a box on top like a shoebox on stilts. One foot was dented and the gun turret had snapped clean off. Nobody claimed it. The lad who handed it in said it had been left under a seat on the 17:42 to Crewe, and he wouldn't take it back either.
I put it on the windowsill of the clerk's office, facing the platform, because it seemed a shame to shut it in a cupboard. Every evening when the last train pulled out, its legs looked as if they were stepping over the rails towards the car park. Mr Okafor from the buffet said it looked like it was going somewhere it wasn't allowed. I said it was only a toy, and he said that's what they all say.
Last Thursday a girl of about nine came to the counter with her father, asking after a blue scarf. While he filled in the form, she pressed her nose to the glass and said the walker was the one she'd drawn at school. She knew which leg was loose. She was right. I handed it over without a form, and her father signed the back of my notepad instead.
I still don't know how it got under that seat. But the windowsill's bare now, and I find I keep looking at the rails.
