Millennium Falcon and flower on the ribs

Neo-trad · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A greyscale shaded spaceship, drawn in the style of the Millennium Falcon, sits on the side of the torso with small four-pointed sparkles to its upper left. Below it, a teal and purple flower with yellow centre and green leaves is outlined in bold black linework and shaded with colour. The shading on the ship is soft and tonal, while the flower is more graphic, and the design is arranged in a compact cluster against bare skin with a grey top at the top edge of the frame.

Dear Lorraine,

I found the shoebox under my bed on Sunday, the one with the cardboard freighter we made in Year Nine, the one Mr Okafor said looked like a dropped tea tray. We glued the cockpit on upside down and called it a feature. Half the reunion was spent in the car park behind the Crown, everyone pretending they'd been to the same places, and nobody asked about the cockpit at all.

Ray Tennant turned up in a suit that was too big for him, and he still swears the ship could do the journey in twelve parsecs. He asked after you. I said you were in Leeds doing something with bridges, which is true enough. Then he told me he'd kept the card we made for the Christmas fair, the one with the teal flower Pam Hollis painted on the back. I didn't know he'd kept anything from that year.

So I took the box home and sat on the kitchen floor with a pot of school glue and the last of the foil stars. The nose is still bent. I've decided that is the most honest thing about it. I stood the ship on the windowsill beside the dead geranium, and in the evening light the stars catch the sun the way they did in the hall that winter, before anyone had told us what we were meant to be.

Come up at Easter. Bring the bridges. We'll have a go at the cockpit again.

Love, Jo
