Stormtrooper holding a boombox on a calf

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A stormtrooper from Star Wars stands with both arms raised, holding a retro boombox above its head. The figure is drawn with bold black outlines and soft grey shading on the armour, belt and boombox. The design is centred on the calf and fills most of the leg, with the boombox at the top and the feet at the bottom.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boombox had belonged to Ruth Pengelly long before it belonged to anyone else, and it weighed more than the white plastic armour suggested. That was the first thing Kenny learnt about being a stormtrooper at the Harbour Lights summer fete, where the committee had paid him a tenner and a bag of chips to stand on the bandstand and look menacing.

He had not expected the crowd to notice him at all. The brass band packed up at half four, the bunting sagged over the slipway, and the gulls began their evening argument about the bins. Then the tape in the boombox caught and the first chords of an old Motown record spilled out across the quay. Nobody could have said who started clapping, but by the time the chorus came round, two trawlermen were dancing with the lifeboat crew, and Kenny was standing on the harbour wall with both arms raised over his helmet, the box held high like a trophy.

He was supposed to be keeping it steady for Ruth's granddaughter, who had asked him to hold it up so the boats could hear. The wind off the bay caught the cassette ribbon and began to pull it loose, a long brown tail unspooling over the water. The gulls rose to chase it. Kenny stayed where he was, arms aching, while the song limped on with no tape left to play it. Ruth laughed from the café doorway and told him to put it down before he dropped it in the harbour. He didn't. The ribbon drifted out past the moored boats, glinting once in the low sun, and he kept his arms up until it was gone.
