Sketched droid on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A loose, sketch-like tattoo of a droid's rounded head, built from overlapping black lines, crosshatching and soft grey shading. Small blue panels and a pink-red circular detail add colour accents, and a few sweeping arcs run across the top and bottom of the design. The photo is taken straight on against a plastic-covered chair backdrop, with the design filling most of the frame.

Brother Demetrios, the cart with the dome is finally out of my yard, and I have been unable to sleep since it left. You will think I am drunk on the wine from the harbour market, but hear me. The patron wanted a thing that would greet guests at the water-clock hall, and I built him a round head of beaten bronze, the size of a large melon, set on a stand with three legs.

I did not fix the plates the way you taught me. I laid them over one another like a net of reeds, then scored them with a point so the lines would cross and cross again, blackened with soot and oil, until a man looking at it cannot tell which seam is joined and which is only shadow. Where the lines thicken you could lose a finger. The patron's steward asked why the head seemed to turn even when it did not move. I told him the eye was a disc of red glass, and that the glass catches the lamp and throws it around the room. He laughed and asked for blue as well, so I set lapis into four places along the rim, the colour of the sea at noon.
Last night, after the oil lamps were out, I carried the head up to the roof to test the curved sun-trough I had hung beside it. Something in the polish made the circles on its brow line up with the rising star, and for a moment the whole thing looked like it was listening. I am not a priest. I will not write that it spoke. But I will say I wept a little, and I did not know why.
Write me back, and tell mother I have kept the best of her lamps.
