Baby elephant with watercolour splashes on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon elephant sits with its trunk curled upwards, drawn in fine black sketchy linework with soft grey shading. Pale blue, lilac and pink watercolour washes sit behind and around the figure, with a thin ground line beneath it. The compact design is centred on the forearm, with plain skin and a white top visible in the background.

The calf had come down the lane at dusk with a rope still knotted round one foot, and nobody in Hollin Orchard knew where it had broken loose from. Old Mabel Trewin, who kept the bees, said it had walked out of the rain the way cloud walks off a hill, slow and certain, and sat down under the Bramley tree as if it had been expected.

The orchard was heavy that August. Windfalls lay in the long grass, sweet and split, and wasps stitched through them in the heat. The children tried to feed the calf plums, but it would only lift its trunk, curl the tip like a question, and blow softly at the blossom that wasn't there any more. Mabel said it was smelling for water. Her grandson said it was smelling for its mother. Neither of them was wrong, and neither of them went to fetch the carter's rope.
Then the storm came over the Quantocks, low and blue-grey, and the first drops hit the leaves with a sound like someone tapping a pan. The calf stood up. It walked to the top of the orchard wall, raised its trunk above the Bramleys, and trumpeted once, a noise so large the rooks went up off the church roof in a black sheet.
By morning the grass was flattened in a ring where it had sat, and the rope lay coiled neatly on the gatepost. Nobody could say who had untied it. Mabel swore she had heard a second trumpet, far off in the hills, answering. She kept a windfall apple on her sill for a week, in case anyone came asking for it.
