Cartoon elephant on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon baby elephant sits with its trunk raised, drawn in dark grey outline with light sketchy shading. Soft purple and blue watercolour washes sit behind the figure, with a pink blush on its cheek and a thin ground line beneath it. Colour ink is limited to these washes, and the composition is centred on the forearm against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain came early to Ostry Ford, so the wedding moved under the old fig tree, and the bread was still warm on the trestle when the ring went missing. Tomas searched his pockets twice. Marta searched the hem of her dress and then the baskets of apricots, and the whole village stood in the mud and looked at one another, as people do when they have lost something precious and do not want to be the one to blame.

Only the calf had seen it. Pell was the youngest of the travelling elephants that came down to the ford each summer to drink and to haul timber, and at weddings he had no work except to stand near the sweets and be fed. He had watched the ring roll off the table's edge and bounce into the wet clay beside the river stones. He did not know what a ring was for. He knew that the thing was shiny and had fallen, so when the people went quiet he walked to the bank, pushed his trunk into the clay, and lifted it high, the ring dangling from the tip like a small sun.

Marta laughed first, then cried, then took the ring and kissed the calf's wrinkled forehead. Her grandmother, who had seen three weddings and two floods, said that a creature who gives back what is not his should be given something of his own. So they brought Pell a bowl of sugared figs, which he ate slowly, sitting down in the dust with his back legs folded beneath him, while the band began to play again.

By dusk the rain had stopped and the sky over the water turned violet and blue, the colour of the river when the sun leaves it. Pell sat at the edge of the lane with his trunk still raised, as if he were holding something up for the bride to see, and nobody moved him on. The ford still tells it this way, and the people there have never tidied the riverbank since.
