Sketched rabbit with watercolour splashes on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A rabbit in mid-leap is drawn in loose, thin black linework, with a faint second outline of the animal sitting behind it. Soft blue, purple and pink watercolour washes sit behind and beneath the figure, with light shading in the fur. The design runs diagonally across the upper arm, and the colour is applied as splashes rather than solid fills.

Gather in, you lot, and mind the lamp, it's the last of the paraffin. Nobody in the Sallow Reach has seen a proper rabbit since the wall came down, so you'll have to take my word for the one called Tansy Quill. She lived in the seed-hall at Harrowby, where the old orchard drips into the reservoir, and she was the fastest thing on four legs for thirty miles. Fast enough, the hall-keepers said, to be in two places at once if she wanted.

The trouble started the spring the river turned blue. Not clean blue, mind, but the bruise colour that came off the cooling works upstream, and the pink was the rust bleeding from the old pylons. Tansy saw the flood coming before anyone else did. She ran for the sluice gates at Ashgrove, and she ran so hard the air behind her kept its shape. There were two of her, one going forward and one a breath behind, like a pencil line someone had drawn twice to be sure. The keepers swore they could see the willows through the second one.

She opened the gates with her own weight, they say, though I've never believed the weight part. What I do believe is that the water went down that afternoon, and the children of Harrowby still have a rabbit-shaped stain on the sluice wall, faint as a memory, blue at the edges and pink in the middle. You can touch it if you like. It doesn't mind.
