Tuesday. The creature has eaten the entire hibiscus hedge along the harbour wall again, and the harbourmaster wants a word with me, which is ridiculous, because I am only the lighthouse keeper and the creature belongs to nobody. It came out of the sea three weeks ago in a crate marked FRAGILE in three languages, and it has been fragile ever since in the way a bull is fragile.

It has ears like two pink sails and a grin that would frighten a customs officer. It sleeps in the lamp room on my good blanket and sings to the gulls in a voice like a rusted gate. Mrs Okafor from the shop says it is a spirit of the island come to sort us out. I say it is a stowaway with appetites.
Today I caught it trying to hide the stolen flowers in my boot. It looked up at me with those dark button eyes, flattened its ears and held out a single red bloom as an apology. I could not stay cross. I tucked the flower behind my ear, and it climbed onto my shoulder, which it only does once it has decided I am its.
Tomorrow the harbourmaster comes with his forms. I have already moved the clippers out of reach. The creature is asleep on the blanket, one ear folded over its face like a sunhat, and I have decided that sunhats are a matter for the island, not the mainland, which is how I came to keep it.
