Stitch peeking from a mound on forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon blue creature with large pink ears and a wide toothy grin waves from behind an orange mound with a small green leaf. Two blue paw prints sit on the mound, and the design is shaded with soft highlights and outlines. Bright blue, pink and orange ink dominate against pale skin, with a dark leather surface behind the arm.

"Morning," it said, in the careful voice of someone who had been practising. It waved with both hands, which meant letting go of the soil it had been clinging to.

The creature looked down at the mound, then at its own feet, pressed into the dirt in neat blue prints. "Only borrowing," it said, and sniffed the marrow leaf sprouting from its side as if that settled the matter.
She bargained with it over the next fortnight, the way you bargain with a fox or a teenager. The rhubarb was its, provided it stopped tunnelling under the lane and frightening the vicar's cat. Each morning after that, a paw print appeared on her kitchen windowsill, and beside it, a single green leaf, very carefully placed.
