A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has kept every track overnight, so you can read the yard like a ledger before the kettle has boiled. Your father's boots go to the barn and back. The dog has made a loose circle by the gate. Then, beside the water trough, there is a pair of small prints pressed flat into the white, toes spread wide as if whoever made them was pleased with the cold. You stand in your dressing gown and count them twice, because your granddaughter Nell was supposed to be asleep in the back bedroom with the door shut.

The prints lead across the yard, past the cold tap, and in through the half-open barn door. Inside, the lantern you left on the nail is still burning low, and its light makes a ring on the rafters, pale and round, so the whole loft looks like it has been given a crown. A grey feather lies on the bale beneath it, long and curved, as if something had shed it on the way past. You follow the prints up the ladder rungs, one wet footprint at a time, and find her in the straw with her socks in one hand and a newborn lamb curled against her stomach.

She is asleep, breathing slow, and the ewe watches you from the pen below with the calm of an animal that has seen worse nights. You do not wake her. You sit on the bottom rung and wait until the light comes grey through the slats. Then you lift her as carefully as you would lift anything warm and sleeping, carry her back across the yard, and set her down on the step, where you kneel and press your own boot print in the snow, right beside hers, both of you finally going the same way.
