Wolf tattoo across the stomach
Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
A large wolf head with bared fangs and glowing eyes fills the stomach, surrounded by swirling smoke and ornamental details. The wolf is rendered in black and grey with soft shading and bold outlines, and the composition is cropped to the torso, hands and upper thighs. A floral tattoo and lettering are partly visible on the thigh, and colour ink appears on the arm.

Dear Nell, the fog has sat on the Dogger for three days and the boiler smoke hangs over the deck like wet wool, so I write this by the stove with my fingers still stiff from the gutting table. You'll laugh, but Skipper Hallam had the lads bolt the old wolf-head back on the bow before we sailed. Grandfather carved it from a scrap of Baltic oak, with teeth like a rat trap and eyes he painted the green of a bottle. Hallam says a wolf keeps a boat off the shoals, and nobody argues with a man who has lost two smacks and not a single hand.

Last night the fog thinned for an hour and the moon came through, and the carving's eyes shone back at the water like lamps. I thought of the tale Mam used to tell about the wolf that swam beside the herring girls at Whitby, how it never touched anyone who kept their oilskins buttoned. I joked about it with Tom Gale, but he didn't laugh. He said that two nights ago he'd seen the wolf's head turned toward the stern, and he'd sworn on his mother's Bible it had not been turned when we sailed.
This morning the fog lifted clean as a sheet pulled off a bed, and the bow was bare. Only a splinter of oak remained, and the green eye, which Tom found caught in the trawl net with a skein of weed through its socket. Hallam says the sea takes its due and we're lucky it wasn't a man. I've wrapped the eye in my handkerchief and put it in my pocket, meaning to give it you when we dock at Hull. Keep the lamp lit in the window for me, love, and mind the wolf doesn't come asking for it back.
