Rose tattoos on both arms at the beach
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a fishnet bikini sits on sand with her face cropped out of frame, showing heavily tattooed arms. The tattoos include rose designs with shaded petals and leaves, rendered in black and grey. The composition is close and natural, with sea and rocks blurred in the background and silver jewellery visible on her wrists and neck.

Every spring the boats came in low and grey over the bar at Hallow Quay, and every spring Mags Trelawney carried her grandmother's needles down to the slipway in a biscuit tin. She inked roses and nothing else. The ink was black, and the grey wash was soot mixed with rainwater, because she said colour drowned in salt.

The men came to her before the first run, rolling their sleeves up on the overturned crab pots. She shaded each petal slowly, dark at the folds and light at the rim, and she folded the leaves until they looked like they had been left out in the weather. Nobody asked what the roses were for. Old Jory Pascoe said they were a promise made to the water, that the man wearing one belonged to someone ashore and would be counted when the tide turned.
One November the sea took the Maud and her crew of four. That spring, Mags found a rose on her own forearm that she had never inked. It was shaded too heavily, the petals crowded, the leaves cut short. Her youngest, Tamsin, had done it with a sewing pin and a pot of ink while she slept, and she was crying so hard she could not explain it.
Mags did not scrub it off. She took the girl's hand, showed her how to hold the needle lightly, and let her work on a sheet of scrap wood until the petals opened in the right order. By the next spring the quay had a second inker, and the roses on the arms of the men coming home were sometimes hers and sometimes Tamsin's, and nobody could say which was which.
