She opened it an inch with the peel still in her hand. A grey animal sat on the step, thin as a coat hanger, its eyes catching the lamp from Clover Lane. Not a wolf, the vet would say, just a lurcher with bad luck and worse manners. But she had seen how it looked at the proving baskets, and there was the chalk on the wall inside, BAD WOLF, a joke from the Christmas party that nobody had ever bothered to wipe off.

After that it came every morning, and every morning the heel was gone before she finished her first mug of tea. Her uncle, phoning from the coast, called it a thief. Nell called it the only customer who never asked for a receipt.
On the Tuesday it didn't come. She stood at the door until the sky turned from ink to pewter, then took down the flour sack from the shelf to start the next batch. Stencilled on its side, in faded red, were the same plain letters, and she laughed out loud in the empty kitchen. Then she heard claws on the gravel outside, and she left the door open.
