Bad Wolf lettering near the collarbone

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the words BAD WOLF tattooed in black ink across the upper chest, close to the collarbone and shoulder strap of a dark top. The letters are bold, uneven and hand-drawn in appearance, with solid fills and slightly irregular edges. The ink is black and grey with no colour, set against warm skin and a background with a Union Jack flag and everyday room items.

Dear Marjorie,

The shed door is finally off its hinges, and I have had to face what your Frank left behind. Under the potting bench, pencilled in capitals on the underside of the plank, are the words BAD WOLF, shaky at the O and pressed so hard the lead has gone silver. I thought at first it was the name of some sweet pea nobody has grown since the fifties. Then I found the same two words on the rhubarb forcer, and again on the inside of the water butt lid, which I would swear I scrubbed last spring.

Mr Okafor from number nine says the lodgers used to play a game out here, writing secret messages and hiding them where the next person would only find them by accident. I told him that was nonsense, and then he showed me the tatty paperback in his coat pocket, with a page turned down at a picture of a blue box, and I had to sit down on the step.

I've left the bench where it is. The runner beans are up the canes now and the bees are at the lavender as if it were the last summer there would ever be. Tomorrow I'll put the spade in beside the compost heap, where Frank always said the good soil was, and see whether there's anything under it but worms.

Your loving sister, Pat
