Oda had kept the hens alone since the winter her husband went down to the mill and did not come back up, so when a wolf started taking eggs from under the speckled hen she did not reach for the gun. She sat on the back step with her tea going cold and watched it. It was a grey, rangy thing with one ear folded flat, and it stood at the edge of the cabbages like a man waiting for a bus.

Next morning she took the old typewriter down from the dresser, the one with the sticking e, and rolled a card into it. She typed only two words, bad wolf, all in lower case because the capitals had gone soft years ago. She pinned the card to the gate with a clothes peg and went indoors to see whether the creature could read.

It could. Mrs Pollard from the lane came by at noon and found the wolf sitting square on the path, studying the card with its head on one side. She swore it breathed out through its nose as if it were laughing. By evening the hens were shut in, the fox that had been scratching under the hedge had gone elsewhere, and a neat stack of kindling waited by the shed that Oda had never asked for.

Every week after that she typed a fresh card, and the wolf came to read it and went on keeping the hens safe from things with no manners. When the paper finally yellowed and the peg rotted through, Oda pinned up a new card anyway. The wolf was already lying in the sun beside the gate, waiting for it, and the lane agreed it had never seen a dog so pleased with its own name.
