Line drawing design of a pink heart balloon with a fine line string forming the words love you, shown on a plain cream background with no body placement visible.

Heart balloon with love you script

Fine line · Mixed · Flash

A pink heart-shaped balloon with a small knot sits above a thin black string that forms the words love you in flowing script. The balloon is softly shaded in pale pink with a small highlight, while the lettering and string are drawn in delicate single-weight black linework. The design is centred on an off-white background with generous empty space around it.

Sit down, sit down, the cake can wait another minute, it has waited longer than most of us. My uncle Tomas sold balloons off a barrow outside the church gates in Wrenhithe, and on the morning of the Ashby wedding he had one pink heart left and nothing else to offer a lad who came running up the lane with three pence and no breath in him.

The lad wanted a heart. Tomas tied the last one to a length of string, then took the pencil from behind his ear and, while the boy stamped his feet on the cobbles, wrote the words down the line letter by letter, so the message ran from the knot to the ground. Love you, he wrote, and nothing more, because the boy had said that was all he could afford to say out loud.

The boy ran off towards the chapel steps with the string wound round his fist. Tomas always swore the lettering loosened in the wind and climbed a little higher, because the bride came out of the vestry just then, saw the pink heart bobbing over the gate, and laughed so hard she had to hold on to the porch post.

Years later she bought the last of his balloons for her own granddaughter. She told me the trick was simple: keep a thing light enough to rise, and never let go of the end of it. So mind your glasses, and hold on to your end.
