Banana tattoo on the thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A single banana is drawn in solid black outline with patchy grey and white shading across its body, giving it a bold, graphic look. It sits on the outer upper thigh and is the clear focal point against plain, pale skin. The photograph is black and white and framed tightly on the leg.

The crates came off the Avonmouth boat in the wet, stencilled green and stacked three high on my father's deck, and he swore at every one of them because bananas will not wait for a man to be ready. By the Thursday the cabin smelt as sweet as a bakery and the mate was eating them on the tiller with a face like thunder.

Only one went wrong in the right way. It sat apart on the cabin roof in the sun, its skin going from green to yellow to that freckled brown, and when I came up from the engine with oil to the elbows I found my father standing over it with a pencil behind his ear. He had a sketchbook bought at the Bristol market, and he was not drawing the lock, or the gulls, or the bridge at Keynsham. He was drawing the banana, getting it wrong, tearing the page out and starting again.
'Everyone looks at the sweetness,' he said. 'Nobody looks at the curve. Like the bow of a boat that's been tied up too long.' We ate the rest on the run into Bath. He kept the peel and dried it flat on the stove rail, then rubbed a scrap of lamp soot across the back of his drawing paper and worked the bruised places with his thumb until the grey came up like river mist.
When the barge was sold that autumn, the buyer found a banana on the cabin wall, dark and sharp as a crow's wing, with the paper left white where the light had fallen. He thought it was damp and wanted it painted over. My father let him think so, and kept the cabin key on a loop of blue string in his pocket until the day he died.
