Simple dachshund line tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms a simple outline of a dachshund in profile, with a long body, short legs, a drooping ear and a tail. The linework is even and thin, with no shading or fill, and the design is small and sits near the wrist. The photograph is in black and white, with the forearm against a background of vertical pleated fabric.

Dear Maud, the ship's cat has had kittens in the lamp locker and the captain has declared it a matter for the Admiralty, so you may imagine the state of things. I am writing this by the stub of a candle because the purser says the oil is for the lamps and not for my nonsense, and because I promised you I would tell you about the dog.

His name is Mr Pennock, though nobody on the Lydia Grace has ever called him anything but Sausage. He came aboard at Falmouth under the arm of a dockside widow who wanted a fare for him that the mate would not pay. He is long as a bolster and about as dignified, with a single ear that folds down over one eye whenever he is pleased, which is often, and legs so short he seems to walk on the deck by a sort of rumour. He sleeps on the warm side of the galley stove and has never once, in four weeks, looked at the sea.

Yesterday the wind went round and the foresail split. The men were up the mast in a fright, and the whole watch below was shouting at once, and Mr Pennock came trotting out of the forecastle and sat down squarely in front of the wheel as if he meant to steer. The helmsman laughed so hard he let her fall off two points. I have never seen anything so ridiculous, and I have never been so glad of a fool.

So here is my news: I have been to the ship's barber, who is also the sailmaker, and asked him for a little drawing of Sausage on my arm, one line, no shading, so it will not run in the wet. He thinks me mad. He has drawn it twice now and the second is good enough, long and low with the ear hanging. I will show it you when I am home, if the sea allows. Give my love to Father and tell him the cat is not to be named after the captain, whatever he hears.
