Banana tattoo on the upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A single banana is tattooed on the inner upper arm, shown curved with a black outline and dark shading along one side. The fill is orange-yellow with black mottled patches that suggest the speckled skin of a ripe banana. The background is a green surface and a dark blue trouser leg, and the arm is photographed at an angle with the sleeve pushed up.

The banana had been sitting on the staff fridge shelf since Monday, which was the first thing Maureen noticed, because nobody at Cresswell Road ever put fruit anywhere except the bowl by the till. She found it at ten to one, wedged between a tub of margarine and a yoghurt nobody would claim, its skin gone the colour of weak tea and freckled with dark flecks, as if someone had flicked a loaded brush at it.

'It's ripe,' said Ruth, leaning over her shoulder with a tray of foil-wrapped jacket potatoes. 'It's past ripe,' said Maureen. 'It's reached the stage where it's honest about itself.' Ruth laughed and said it belonged in the bin, but Maureen had already seen the name written on the peel in biro, Darren B, and knew it had been left behind by a boy who was too shy to ask for it back.
She carried it two flights up to the art room, where Mr Okafor was teaching a Year Ten group about pop art. Forty pencil sketches of soup tins and film stars covered the walls. Nobody wanted the banana, so she set it on the windowsill in a jam jar and let the afternoon light come through the speckles, which turned out to be the only thing in the room anyone looked at for longer than a minute.
At half past three Darren came back for it, stood in the doorway with his hands in his pockets, and said nothing at all. Maureen pointed at the jar. He took it, studied it for a long moment, and said, 'It's gone a bit black.' 'Yes,' she said. 'That's when they're best.' He grinned and left, and the banana went with him, held out in front of him like a small gold lantern.
