It was the grey of a wet slate roof, he said, or the inside of a mussel shell, or a gull's underwing in February. Dilys had run every formula in the book. The fan deck held fourteen hundred chips and not one sat right beside the scrap. Terry, twenty years on the mixing machine, said the paper had faded in the sun. The man said it hadn't. It was the only colour his late aunt had ever chosen for anything, and he didn't want to paint over it without being certain.
Dilys went into the back and came out with a blank swatch card from the drawer of discontinued stock. She printed a label on the machine, a small band across the bottom with a code she made up on the spot, and left the top panel empty. "That's yours to fill," she said. "Take it home and hold it against the wall until you know." He turned it over twice, as if there might be instructions, then slid it into his jacket pocket and thanked her in the careful way people thank a dentist.
He came back the following Thursday with the card gone soft at the corners. He didn't ask for a tin. He laid the card face up on the counter and pressed his thumb to the empty panel, leaving a faint grey print in the middle of it. "There," he said. "That's the one."
