Blackletter lettering on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests open on a silver laptop while the forearm shows a small blackletter lettering tattoo on the inner wrist. The letters are solid black ink with sharp, angular strokes and pointed serifs, and the skin around them looks lightly freckled with a faint scratch line below. The background includes dark denim and a patterned bedsheet, with the tattoo sitting at the centre left of the frame.

Brother Aelric had been told twice that the capital in the margin was wrong, and he still could not see it. The angles sat too sharp, the pointed serifs too eager, and every stroke he drew came out looking like a fence in a gale. Abbot Osric wanted the letters to read like iron gates. Aelric wanted them to read at all.

Dawn came through the scriptorium's east window and lay on the vellum like spilt milk. He scraped the failed line with his knife until the skin thinned, then set the nib again, cutting it slantwise so the ink would pool in the corners. The ink was lampblack and gum, mixed in a horn cup that the novice Tobias kept warm beside his own elbow. Tobias watched without speaking, which was the kindest thing anyone had done for Aelric that winter.
By noon the page held three words in the new hand, black as a crow's wing and cut square at every foot. Osric came with his cane, bent over the desk, and said nothing for so long that Aelric began to count the candles.
"Good," the abbot said at last. "They look like they could hold a door shut."
That night Aelric walked the cold cloister alone. He rubbed his inner wrist where a smear of ink had soaked through the cuff, and beneath his thumb he could feel the shape of the first letter, sharp as a hook, staying put long after the page had dried.
