Bare branch tree on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black tree with a short dark trunk at the base and many thin, bare branches spreading outward across the inner wrist. The linework is fine and solid, with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The photo is taken close up in soft natural light, with a beaded bracelet in red and green and a grey knit sleeve visible at the edge of the frame.

Shut the door quiet, love, the dough doesn't like a draught. There, that's better. You see the elm out past the glass? Stripped to the bone since November, same as it was the winter my father opened this place. Folk pass it and call it dead. It isn't dead. It's only keeping its counsel.

When the war came, a man called Albert Pym used to lean against that trunk every morning before the bread was out, waiting for my mother to pass him a heel of yesterday's loaf through the side gate. He'd tell her the branches were roads, and every fork a town he meant to walk to once the lads were home. She gave him bread for a month and he gave her a promise, that he'd come back for her with a town folded in his coat pocket. He never came back down any of those roads. But she kept the gate on the latch for eleven years, and every frost she'd scrape a clear patch on this window and count the forks like beads.

So you don't rush the proving, and you don't rush a tree. Put the tin on the rack and listen. That tick is the loaf cooling. And mind the third branch from the top, the one that splits in two as if it's changed its mind. That's where he meant to build her a house with a blue door.

Look at the window now. The first grey is coming up behind it, and the branches have gone black against it, every fork picked out in frost. Pass me the peel. We'll have the first batch out before the milkman gets to the corner.
