Circular mandala design on a palm
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A circular mandala covers the centre of an open palm, with a dotted inner ring, a flower-like central motif and outer scrolls, teardrops and spikes radiating outwards. The fine, dark lines are filled in solidly in places and sit on skin with warm, orange-toned lighting. The design is centred on the palm and fills most of the frame, and it appears to be henna or a temporary ink design.

Ruqaya sat on the low stool with her palm turned up like a bowl. She wanted a sun, she said, something to carry into the exam hall on Monday, and Sabah only nodded and dipped the cone. You begin in the middle, she told her, with the dots, one, two, a ring of them, because the centre is where the light starts. Then the petals, then the thick ring that keeps everything from running off the edge. The rays go last. Make the drops point away from you, Sabah said, so the light has somewhere to go.
When the paste had dried to a dark crust, Ruqaya held it up to the bulb and asked what happened when it flaked away. Sabah laughed and said it would not flake so much as sink in, and for a fortnight it would fade from black to rust to the colour of weak tea. Ruqaya walked home with her fist closed around the cone of her own fingers, careful not to touch anything. At the corner she opened her hand once to look. The rays had spread a little in the warmth, and every drop still pointed outward, away from her.
