Small script tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of two arms crossed at the wrist, with the hands pressed palm to palm and dark grey nails. A small black script tattoo sits on the forearm near the wrist, drawn in thin, even linework. The plain white background and soft, even lighting keep the focus on the tattoo and the hands.

The brush had to be loaded just so, a quarter-inch of paint drawn off the bristles against the lip of the tin, or the stroke came out fat and forgiving, which Ada had learned was the worst thing a letter could be. Mr Halloran watched her over his spectacles from the stool by the stove. 'Again,' he said. 'Thin as a hair on a dead man's head, and no hesitation.'

The boat was the Marian Dove, a crabber out of Staithes, and her owner wanted the name in gold leaf on the transom with a fine black shadow beneath. Ada had lettered forty boats that winter. She could do the swoops of a capital M without thinking. But the old man had left her the last word, a small thing to finish in the margin by the stern post, and she kept losing her nerve at the joins.

On the Thursday the Dove went out in a flat sea and did not come back in. Ada sat in the shop with the liner in her hand while the lifeboat men came and went under the window. Mr Halloran did not speak. When the light was nearly gone he pushed a sheet of tracing paper across the bench, the word already drawn in pencil, and tapped it once with a fingernail.

She inked it that night in one unbroken line, never lifting the brush. In the morning the owner came for the board and read it with his cap in his hands, and said nothing about the spelling. He only said it looked as if the boat had been waiting to be called. Ada wiped the brush clean and reached for the next board.
