Bare tree and birds on a wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a leafless tree with spreading branches sits on the inner wrist, with a trail of four birds in flight rising from its upper right. The linework is solid and silhouette-like, with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone. The hand is raised against a dark blue sleeve and a sheet of printed paper, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

Hold your coins close, love, the rain's already had the cheap ones off the stall. Sit where the awning drips on somebody else. Right, then. The tree on the hill above Cold Hebble had no leaves, not in summer, not in the year the mill burned. Its branches went out like the fingers of a hand that had forgotten what it was reaching for.

Four birds lived in that tree, though nobody ever saw them roost. Nan Pell kept a tally on the back of a flour sack. Each dawn one bird lifted off the top limb and flew east over the moor, and each dusk it came back with a feather missing, or so she swore. When the fourth bird went, her grandson Tobias, a boy who could never whistle, climbed the hill in the sleet to see where they were going.

He found nothing but a flat grey stone, a tin with a cracked lid, and a note in pencil that read, Stop counting. They are not coming back for you. Tobias laughed at that for a week, and then he stopped laughing. He walked down the hill with the tally in his coat and the rain running off his nose, and the tree behind him looked, for the first time, like a thing waving goodbye.

So if you're waiting on somebody here today, pick a branch and count it out. When you lose your place, start again from the top. That's the whole trick of it. Next coin, please, and mind the puddle by the cabbages.
