Bat outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small bat silhouette is drawn in a single black outline with no shading or fill. It sits on the inner wrist near the base of the palm, with the hand visible above it. The photo has a warm, sunlit tone with a soft lens flare on the right, and the tattoo stands out clearly against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bat came to the ruined castle of Harrowmere the winter the last bell cracked, and it did not come alone. It came with a girl named Ysolde Pennick, who had walked up the valley road with a lantern and a sack of salt, looking for work that paid in bread. The old steward, a man called Dunstan Vey, gave her the south tower to sleep in because no one else would.

She found the bats there, hundreds of them, hanging in the vaulted dark above the stair. Each evening they woke and poured through the arrow slits like smoke, and each dawn they came back. Dunstan said they were the castle's memory, and that a bat which lost its way would forget the names of the dead. Ysolde laughed at him, then stopped laughing when she saw that one small bat never left the sill of her window. It was black and thin-winged, and it watched her the way a clerk watches a debtor.

In spring she took the salt to the well and the bat followed her down the hill, circling her head. At the water she found a cracked bell lying in the reeds, its clapper gone. She carried it back on her shoulder, and every night she hung it from the tower beam. The bats gathered beneath it, and when the wind came up off the moor the bell rang once, low and clear, and the whole flock folded their wings at the same moment, like a page turning.

Dunstan died before midsummer, and the bat was still on the sill when they buried him. Ysolde kept the bell, and the castle kept its name, and the bat kept its place at her window until the day she was old enough to leave, when it lifted off without a sound and did not look back.
