The kite had been working the towpath since Tuesday, and by Friday Ada had stopped pretending it was only passing through. She set the kettle on the stove of the Mavis Rose and watched it through the porthole, a dark cross against the grey water, wings held flat, tail forked like a knife someone had dropped into the sky.

Her father had called them rain-hawks, a name nobody else on the Trent used. He had brought the boat up from Gainsborough the summer her mother left, and he taught her that a bird which rides the wind without beating its wings is doing sums with the air, and a sensible person does not try to beat it at arithmetic. She had always thought that was the sort of thing men said to avoid carrying their own shopping.
On Saturday the kite came low over Torksey lock and took a crust from the rail not three feet from her hand. It did not look at her. It rose on a warm bank of air above the weir, its wing edges ragged as if dragged through wet paint, and went north with the current, towards the place her father had marked on the chart in soft pencil and called home.
Ada untied the bow line first, then the stern. The Mavis Rose swung slowly out into the brown water, and she let the tiller go loose in her hand and followed the bird up the reach until it was a smudge against the cloud and the river had her entirely.
