Bat symbol tattoo on the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a bat symbol inside a black oval outline, tattooed on the inner wrist and forearm against a plain pale background. The bat shape is solid black with pale areas along the ears and lower edge, and the outline is bold and even. The tattoo is centred in the frame with the hand angled upward and no other colour is present.

The rescue Land Rover had come back from the Bwlch Gwyn road with its near-side door stove in and a wing that no longer matched the rest of it, and Dafydd wanted it repainted before the Saturday open day. "Nobody looks at the wing," he said, handing me a brush he had already cleaned twice. "They look at the mark."

The mark was his idea, sketched on the back of a feed bill: a black oval with a bat folded inside it, the ears sharp as a pair of scissors. He had seen it on a lad's wrist in the Llanberis chip shop and decided it was the most sensible thing he had ever seen. I spent the morning taping the oval out and ran out of black halfway across the left ear.

Rain came over the pass sideways while I was mixing. The only thing left in the shed was a tin of cream gloss from painting the gate, so I thinned it and laid it into the lower scallops and the tips of the wings, leaving the centre bare for the black to go on after. It dried patchy. The shape looked less like a badge then and more like something sheltering under the oval, pale at the edges where the light caught it.

Dafydd came out with two mugs and stood looking for a long time. "Shame about the colour," he said. Then he pressed a thumb to the damp edge of the cream, left a clear print, and nodded. "Well. It'll get them up the hill." We pulled the tape at dusk, and the Land Rover went out on Saturday with a bat on its door, cream-edged, heading over the top.
