Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a bat-style emblem tattoo outlined in bold black. The emblems are filled with yellow ink, and a black silhouette of a figure sits across the centre of each design. The two tattoos mirror one another and are set against plain, softly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tracing paper has gone soft at the folds, and Nell has rubbed the carbon off one corner with her thumb so many times it shines. Two halves of the same bat, cut by hand with her kitchen scissors, each one useless without the other. She holds hers up to the sodium lamp outside the bus shelter on Corvin Quay and says the figure belongs on the left, because the left is where you stand when you are about to jump. You say it belongs on the right. Neither of you is in the mood to be right at one in the morning.

You work nights at the depot on Tanner Road, checking tyre pressures and hosing diesel off the yard, and Nell paints shop fascias for a firm that only rings her when the rain has stopped. Between you there is a whole city of closed shutters and pigeons asleep in the eaves. Last week a gull got into the workshop and tore the stencil in half, and Nell cried for an hour, then drew the bat again from memory, perfectly, while the kettle boiled dry.

The power goes at twenty to two, the whole of Corvin Quay blinking out block by block until only the river has any light. Nell laughs and says the city is doing it for effect. You take the halves from her and press them edge to edge against the cold glass of the shelter. The two shapes lock with a soft click that is nothing but your own nerves. In the dark the small figure seems to drop from one wing and catch itself on the other.

The lamps come back on. Nell is already walking towards the depot with the tracing paper folded under her arm, and you stay a moment longer, watching the bat in the glass, black and gold, with its dark shape leaving the centre and heading for the water.
