Dear Pat, the council painters came to Hartley Court on Tuesday and gave the bin chute landing on floor nine three coats of magnolia, and I thought you would want to know what came through the paint anyway. Those two black figures were drawn by Danny Keogh and his cousin Lee the summer they were eleven, and they fought for a week over who got the wings. Danny wanted feathers like the angel on Nan's Christmas card. Lee wanted leathery bat wings because he'd seen them on the telly and said feathers were for pigeons.

The round-headed one is Danny's and the one with pointed ears is Lee's. Lee moved to Hull with his mum last spring, and Danny's mum asked me to stop the men before they touched it. I stood on that landing with the roller in my hand and said nothing. I let them paint round the shapes, and they did, so neatly you'd think somebody had planned it.

This morning the lift stalled between six and seven and I had ten minutes to look at the wall while the engineer rang his office. Under the grey, the outlines are darker than they were, like they've been waiting for the light to change. Both figures are still walking side by side towards the stairs, one with its feathers out and one with its bat wings spread, heading for the ground floor the way boys do when nobody is calling them back. Love, Maureen.
