Captain America shield breaking through skin on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A Captain America shield, with its red, white and blue rings and white star, appears to burst through cracked grey skin on the outer forearm. The shield has a glossy, shaded finish with highlights and a dark cast shadow, giving a three-dimensional effect. Colour ink dominates the design, set against a plain grey-toned studio background.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and keep your hands off the wine until I've finished. The wall of Orrun had stood three hundred years, and in all that time nobody had ever knocked a hole in it. Men tried. They rolled their rams up the slope and the rams split like green wood. So the Ferrier brothers went into the eastern quarry instead, and came back with a grey stone that rang like a bell when you struck it.

Old Mesh the shieldmaker had one commission left before the siege closed the roads. He took a disc of oak as wide as a cartwheel and bound its rim with bronze and red-dyed hide. In the centre he set a white star cut from pale shell, backed with blue glaze the colour of the sea off Tarsa. He worked three nights without sleeping. On the fourth he carried it up to the wall in a donkey cart, under a sheet, past sentries who thought it was a coffin.
Its bearer was a girl named Idra who had never lifted anything heavier than a water jar. She set the shield against the eastern wall where the stone was thinnest, which was the stone that rang. She struck it once with the flat of her hand, then took her grandmother's hammer and struck the same place until the cracks spread like frost across a pond. Nobody on either side breathed.
The wall did not fall. It only opened, a web of grey fissures, and out of the middle came the shield, flat and bright, turning slowly in the dust like a sun that had decided to rise sideways. The enemy archers loosed every arrow they had. Not one stuck. When the dust settled, the wall was still standing, and the shield lay in the gap, waiting for someone brave enough to pick it up.
