Batman portrait with bat symbols on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A realistic colour tattoo of a Batman cowl, with a human face visible beneath the mask, shown with a blue bat symbol above and an orange and black bat symbol below. Soft blue shading and a rainbow glow behind the figure add depth, and the piece wraps around the limb. The composition is vertical, filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lost property cupboard at Halverton had held the same things for as long as I had worked the night desk: one umbrella, three odd gloves, a tin of Quality Street with the lid missing. So when Mr Pratt came to the window at ten to midnight with a carrier bag held out in front of him, I assumed it would be another umbrella.

It was a canvas, rolled tight and stiff with dried paint. He unrolled it on the ticket counter under the strip light. A cowl rose out of the cloth, grey-blue and hooded, its ears sharp against a band of rainbow stripes that someone had blended with a wet thumb. Above it floated a bat symbol in pale blue, and below it, in orange and black, a second one, drawn much bolder. "It was for the school play," Mr Pratt said. "Our Maisie insisted on a hero. I painted it in the garage over three weekends. Then I left it on the 18:42 and I've been trying to get it back ever since."

I asked why he hadn't reported it sooner. He said he'd been waiting for the train to bring it back to him, which made no sense, and then he laughed at himself, which did. I logged it as Batman, Platform 2, and wrote the time beside it, because the form asked for a time. He shook my hand through the hatch like a man signing for a parcel he never expected to be delivered.

When he had gone I hung the canvas on the hook beside the umbrellas. The rainbow caught the light from the platform, and for a moment the blue bat above the cowl seemed to be flying out of the stripes towards the door, the way a thing does when someone has finally come to collect it.
