Be happy script on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's upper arm, with a hand gathering the striped sleeve above it. The tattoo is the words be happy in a thin, flowing script, with a single fine line that sweeps under the lettering and out to each side. The ink is solid black on a light skin tone, and the plain blue and white striped top and blurred background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The kettle has boiled dry twice since Tuesday because I keep forgetting it is only me in the kitchen now. Your father's chair still has the cushion you threw at him at Christmas, and nobody has had the heart to move it. Mrs Pryce next door says the Mersey has been grey all week. I have decided to believe her.
The parcel from the chandler's came on Thursday. Inside were the boiled sweets you promised and a pencil stub that I am fairly sure came off the purser's desk. I know the sweets are for the girls at the Methodist hall, so don't pretend otherwise. Your sister wants to know whether sailors really eat biscuits shaped like anchors, and I told her that is exactly the sort of thing a sailor would make up.
You wrote that the sea was flat for eleven days and you didn't know what to make of it. I wish I could say I understood, but I didn't. Your grandfather used to say the ocean only shows you what you carry aboard, so carry something decent. I have written the one thing I want you to keep at the very bottom of this page, where it won't get lost under a bunk.
Be happy, love.
Mum
