Hogwarts castle and golden snitch on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bold owl perches on the top edge of a heart-shaped frame that contains a castle with turrets under a purple and blue sky with clouds. Below, green hills lead down to a golden snitch with outstretched wings, all outlined in heavy black linework with flat colour fills. The composition is centred and fills the forearm evenly.

Right, that's the lights down, so no more questions about the vending machine. Ada, you asked me for a true one, and I'll give you a true one, which is the best kind of made-up. Up the valley past the mill there was a castle with eleven turrets, and every turret had a weathervane that spun whenever the owls came in to roost.

Nobody in that castle could catch the golden ball. It was the size of a plum, it had wings like a kestrel's, and it was forever going off over the hills into the purple evenings. The caretaker, a woman called Mrs Gollop with flour in her hair, said it was worth more than the roof. So the boys took turns climbing the east tower with a fishing net and coming down empty-handed, knees skinned, swearing at the clouds.
Then one winter an owl called Hester landed on the sill of the smallest boy, Eli Marr, who had a cough and was too weak to climb anything. She held a folded note in her beak, scratched in pencil on the back of a cloud: come down to the hills and bring nothing. He went out in his nightshirt with his hands open, and the ball settled into his palm as if it had been waiting for someone who would not chase it.
That's why they stopped chasing it. Eli kept it in his coat pocket for sixty years, and when he died it was still warm, which the family called a lie and I call the castle looking after him. Now go to sleep, Ada. The owl won't come if you're awake.
