Mountain sunset and round green door on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bold tattoo sits on the outer thigh of a fair-skinned person. The top section is a pointed hat shape filled with a red and orange sunset, grey clouds and snow-capped mountains above a blue lake. The lower section shows a grassy hill with pine trees, a chimney, and a round green door with a yellow frame and round windows. Thick black outlines and saturated colour fills give it a classic, solid look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Oswin Teague had been stitching the same brim for three winters, and the hat still would not sit right. Mrs Pennock, who kept the lending library in Cragside, said it was because he sewed it while looking at the wrong hill. So on the morning the lake ice broke, he took the hat, a bundle of bread and a tin of peppermints down the lane to the round green door in the bank above the water, where old Ivy Marl had lived alone since her husband drowned in the reeds.

Ivy did not invite him in. She stood in the doorway with flour to her elbows and studied the hat for a long time, then told him it was too tall and the sunset was wrong, with the orange sitting on the wrong side of the peaks. He asked how she could know. She nodded at the lake, where the water had turned the colour of rust under a sky already bruised with cloud. Every evening for forty years she had watched that mountain go red, she said, and never once had it done what he had drawn.

So he sat on her step and watched. The light slid off the snow, the pines went black one by one, and the lake lit up copper for a minute before it went out. Ivy hummed something under her breath while she worked, and he realised he had spent three winters trying to make the hat fit the view when he should have let the view decide the hat.

When he finally stitched the brim that night, it sat flat and easy on his head. He carried the hat back up the lane in the dark, and Ivy's round green door stayed open behind him, a small square of lamplight on the hill.
