A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pass had closed behind the last wagon, and the innkeeper's daughter, Ilse Marrow, was the only one who still believed the road would open by morning. Her father had stopped counting the lamps in the stable. He sat by the hearth with a bowl of barley broth going cold in his hands and told anyone who would listen that the bears had come down early this year.

A traveller in a patched coat came in at the second bell, stamping snow from his boots. He asked for a bed and nothing else, and when Ilse set a candle beside him he looked at the shutters rattling in their frames and said the wind had a voice like a drover calling his dogs. He paid in old silver with a stamp nobody recognised. Ilse noticed that he never once turned his back to the door.

In the night a scratching came at the back wall, slow and patient, the sound of claws working at mortar. The traveller was already dressed. He took down a heavy grey coat from the peg and went out by the kitchen, and Ilse followed him with the lantern because she was too stubborn to stay behind. In the snow beyond the woodpile stood a great bear, standing on its hind legs as tall as the byre door, its breath smoking like a kettle. The traveller raised his open hands and spoke low, the way one speaks to a horse that has been hurt.

They stood that way until the lantern guttered. Then the bear dropped to all fours and went back into the pines, and the traveller came in with frost in his beard and sat down by the fire. In the morning the road was open and he was gone, and on the snow by the woodpile there was a single silver coin, face up, pressed deep into the drift as if something heavy had stepped on it and walked away.
